Publicizing Your Work and Putting Your Publication on Your Resume

(Sorry, all out of t-shirts, but good news no less !)

Students,

Congratulations to those of you who have achieved the publication of your project Book Project! As I said at the outset of the class, this is something to really celebrate - and shout about both online and on your resume. So, here's some things "to do" once your publication hits the Web.

First, do share the link to the article with your family, friends, and colleagues! Yes, they'll be impressed - and maybe amazed that you are a published author! And, the benefit to you is that the more your article is clicked-on, the higher it will appear in Google searches and increase your odds that this will indeed be the first thing that a potential employer will see when Googling your name (and yes, that's what we want to happen for you!). So, once your publication appears, do post the link to your Facebook account - and Twitter, Pinterest, LinkedIn and whatever else you might use for social media.

Next, do list this prominently on your resume! How to list it on your resume? I would suggest that you create a section on your resume (like your sections on your jobs, education, interests, etc.) entitled "Publications" and list the publication as you would on a research paper. Suggested form:

Publications

Bordelon, Cody Lee (2014, October 29). A Synopsis and Review of How Google Works by Eric Schmidt and Jonathan Rosenberg. The Book Summary Source. Direct link: http://booksummarysource.com/8/post/2014/10/a-synopsis-and-review-of-how-google-works-by-eric-schmidt-and-jonathan-rosenberg.html.

By having your work published, this helps to show potential employers, graduate schools, etc. that you have the requisite abilities to effectively structure your ideas and convey them in writing that you have valuable written communications skills that can help you go far and make yourself an asset to their company, their agency, their program, etc. So, congrats on the achievement - now make it work for you!
